What is the hymen?
The hymen is a thin, elastic layer of tissue at the vaginal opening. Its shape, thickness and elasticity vary greatly from person to person. It may be ring-shaped, crescent-shaped, perforated or divided; in some people it is naturally very thin or elastic from birth.
An individual structure
The shape and elasticity of the hymen differ from birth. There is therefore no single appearance that can be considered “normal”.
Causes of tearing
The hymen can tear for various reasons, most commonly sexual intercourse, or it may stretch without tearing because of its elasticity.
Appearance alone is not evidence
The appearance of the hymen does not reliably indicate a person’s sexual history. The World Health Organization also emphasizes that there is no scientific basis for this.
What to know before your appointment
These are the practical tips I give my patients most often. I explain your personal instructions at the consultation.
Timing
We need to plan the procedure after your period has ended and a few weeks before your planned date.
What to bring
Bring a list of your medications, especially blood thinners, and details of any previous operations.
On the day
Wear comfortable clothing. If sedation is planned, someone should accompany you home.

Main repair approaches
Depending on the tissue, hymenoplasty may involve repairing the existing edges or using flap techniques that take tissue from the vaginal opening.
What is hymenoplasty?
In hymenoplasty I bring the torn edges of the hymen back together with fine dissolvable stitches. I usually perform it in a clinic setting with an appropriate anesthesia plan, and in most cases you can go home the same day.
The suitable technique is decided by considering the amount and structure of the remaining tissue, any previous childbirth or surgery, and the person’s expectations.
Repair of the edges
The edges of the remaining hymenal tissue are gently freshened and brought together with dissolvable stitches. This approach is commonly used when there is enough tissue.
Flap techniques
If the remaining tissue is insufficient, a small flap prepared from the tissue at the vaginal opening may be used to create a new ring of tissue.
“Temporary” and “permanent”
These terms usually refer to the technique used and the timing of the procedure. The suitable approach is decided according to the examination findings.
Anesthesia
The procedure can be planned with local anesthesia or sedation, depending on the person’s health and preferences.
No outcome is guaranteed: Healing and the result of the procedure differ from person to person. No method can guarantee whether bleeding will occur at first intercourse or how much. It is important that we discuss your expectations openly beforehand.

At the consultation my aim is to listen to your expectations, assess the tissue during an examination, decide on the suitable technique and timing, and openly share the possible results and limitations of the procedure.

How does hymenoplasty work in Antalya?
I tailor the plan to each patient; the process usually follows these four steps.
Consultation
We discuss your expectations, medical history and timing with full respect for your privacy.
Examination & consent
I assess the tissue, explain the method, risks and limitations, and ask for your consent.
Procedure
I perform the repair under the agreed anesthesia plan using dissolvable stitches.
Follow-up
I explain your aftercare and we check your healing together at a follow-up visit.
Weeks without intercourse
To allow proper healing, avoiding sexual intercourse, tampon use and activities that put pressure on the area is generally recommended for a few weeks after the procedure. I will confirm the exact period.
Recovery and aftercare after hymenoplasty
Mild soreness, tenderness, swelling and light spotting may occur in the first days. Dissolvable stitches disappear on their own over time. How recovery progresses is closely linked to following the aftercare instructions.
- Take the medications I prescribe exactly as instructed.
- Clean the genital area gently, only as advised.
- Wear loose, cotton underwear.
- Avoid intercourse and tampons for the recommended period.
- Take a break from cycling, horse riding and strenuous exercise.
- Wait for my advice before swimming pools, the sea or baths.
- Attend your planned follow-up appointment.
In an emergency: If you have heavy or increasing bleeding, fever, severe pain or foul-smelling discharge, contact me or the nearest healthcare facility without waiting for your follow-up date.
Travelling for treatment? If you are coming to Antalya for this procedure, plan your stay so that the early follow-up visit can take place before you return home. Discuss the timing of your flight and your return to work with me during the pre-operative consultation.
Possible risks and side effects
Hymenoplasty is a minor surgical procedure, but like any surgery it carries some risks. I discuss your personal risks with you in detail beforehand.
Bleeding
Light spotting can be expected after the procedure. Bleeding that is heavier than I described, or increasing, should be assessed.
Infection
Rare. Fever, increasing pain, redness or foul-smelling discharge should be assessed without delay.
Stitches opening
Strenuous activity or intercourse in the early period can cause the stitches to open and healing to differ from what was expected.
Pain and tenderness
Soreness and tenderness may occur in the first days. Pain may be felt at first intercourse after healing.
Result different from expectations
Tissue healing differs between people; there may be no bleeding at first intercourse, or the result may differ from what was expected.
Anesthesia-related effects
Undesired effects such as nausea, dizziness or an allergic reaction may occur.

Myths and facts about the hymen
Many common beliefs about the hymen do not match scientific evidence. Below are the misconceptions I hear most often in my consultations.
“Everyone bleeds at first intercourse.”
A significant proportion of people with an intact hymen do not bleed at first intercourse. Whether bleeding occurs depends on the structure and elasticity of the hymen and on individual factors.
“A person’s sexual history can be told by looking at the hymen.”
The appearance of the hymen varies greatly between people and does not reliably indicate sexual history.
“Hymenoplasty gives a guaranteed result.”
Healing and results differ from person to person. No method can guarantee bleeding or any specific outcome.
“You can fully return to normal life immediately.”
Most people can return to daily activities quickly, but intercourse, tampons and strenuous activity should be avoided for a few weeks to allow healing.

Will there be bleeding at first intercourse after hymenoplasty?
Whether bleeding occurs, and how much, depends on the tissue structure, the healing process and individual factors. Even people with an intact hymen do not always bleed at first intercourse. For this reason, no specific outcome can be guaranteed after the procedure.
Can hymenoplasty be detected?
The appearance of the hymen varies greatly from person to person. After the procedure, the appearance of the tissue depends on the technique used and the healing process. No method can offer a guarantee of a specific result; you can discuss your questions openly with me during the consultation.
How long before the planned date should hymenoplasty be done?
Timing is planned according to the technique and the healing time. Stitches usually need a few weeks to heal and the tissue to recover. We decide the right timing together at the examination, taking your planned date into account.
Do the stitches need to be removed?
Hymenoplasty usually uses stitches that dissolve on their own over time, so in most cases they do not need to be removed. Please attend the follow-up visit I recommend so we can check your healing.
Can hymenoplasty be done during a period?
The procedure is usually scheduled after menstrual bleeding has ended. This allows a better assessment of the area and makes hygiene easier during healing.
