For women without symptoms, a routine gynecological check-up is generally recommended once a year. The interval for screening such as smear and HPV tests depends on age and previous results.
What happens during a gynecological examination?
I begin every gynecological examination by listening to your concerns and medical history. I adapt the scope to your age, symptoms and wishes, explain each step beforehand, and we can pause whenever you feel uncomfortable.

Before your appointment: If a smear test is planned, avoid vaginal douching, vaginal medicines or creams and intercourse on the day before. For a routine check-up, a time after your period has ended is preferable.

When should the first gynecological visit take place?

Is a gynecological examination painful?
A gynecological examination may cause mild discomfort for many people, but it is usually not painful. Each step is explained during the examination, and you can say if you feel uncomfortable and ask to pause at any time.
Can I have an examination during my period?
In an emergency, your period is no obstacle to an examination. For a routine check-up or tests such as a smear, it is usually recommended to choose a time after your period has ended.
What should I keep in mind before my appointment?
It helps to note the date of your last period, the medicines you take and how long your symptoms have lasted. If a smear test is planned, it is recommended to avoid vaginal douching, vaginal medicines or creams and intercourse on the day before your appointment.
Is bleeding after menopause important?
