What is an abortion?
An abortion is the medical termination of a pregnancy inside the uterus. In everyday use, the term often refers to emptying the contents of the uterus with the vacuum aspiration method. To plan the procedure, ultrasound must confirm that the pregnancy is inside the uterus and establish the gestational age.
Determining gestational age
The date of the last period alone may not be enough. The location and age of the pregnancy are checked with ultrasound.
Health assessment
Medical history, medications, allergies, previous operations and any tests considered necessary are assessed together.
Informed consent
The scope of the procedure, anesthesia options, the expected process, alternatives and possible risks are explained and the consent process is completed.
What to know before your appointment
These are the practical tips I give my patients most often. I explain your personal instructions at the consultation.
Do not delay
Because the legal limit depends on the week of pregnancy, it is important to come as early as possible after a positive test.
What to bring
Bring the date of your last period, your medications and any previous ultrasound reports.
On the day
If anesthesia is planned, I will tell you how long to fast beforehand. Someone should accompany you home.
Afterwards
If you have heavy bleeding, fever or severe pain, contact me or the nearest healthcare facility without waiting for your check-up.
Weeks of pregnancy
In Türkiye, elective termination of pregnancy is assessed within the conditions set out in Law No. 2827 on Population Planning and related regulations.
Is abortion legal in Antalya?
In Türkiye, termination of pregnancy is regulated by Law No. 2827 on Population Planning and related legislation. Elective termination can be considered until the end of the tenth week of pregnancy, provided the legal conditions are met.
For pregnancies beyond ten weeks, the procedure can only be considered under the medical necessities and specialist assessments defined in the legislation. In these cases, different requirements apply regarding the healthcare facility and physician reports.
- Gestational age is confirmed by ultrasound.
- The person’s informed consent is a fundamental requirement.
- Required documents may differ depending on age, marital status and specific legal circumstances.
- The procedure must be carried out in line with the authorization and healthcare facility conditions set out in the legislation.
- The exact legal and medical process that applies to you is explained after the examination.
Important: General information on the internet does not replace an assessment of legal suitability based on your gestational age and personal circumstances. Seeing an obstetrician and gynecologist without delay is important for timing. If you are visiting from abroad, the documents you need will be explained during the consultation.
What is vacuum aspiration?
In vacuum aspiration I remove the contents of the uterus using a suitably sized cannula and controlled negative pressure. I decide on suitability based on gestational age, ultrasound findings, medical history, the examination and my clinical assessment.
Anesthesia planning
Depending on your health, clinical requirements and the anesthesia assessment, the procedure may be planned with options such as local anesthesia or sedation. Not every anesthesia option is suitable for everyone.
A controlled clinical process
Pre-procedure assessment, sterile conditions, monitoring of vital signs and observation afterwards are all part of patient safety. Time at the clinic is not limited to the procedure itself.
A personal assessment: The duration of the procedure, the choice of anesthesia and the observation time at the clinic are not the same for everyone. Fixed times given online should not be taken as personal planning.
How does the abortion process work in Antalya?
I tailor the assessment and procedure plan to each patient; the clinical process usually follows these steps.

I assess the location and age of the pregnancy and your general health.

I explain the procedure, anesthesia, possible risks and follow-up, and we complete the consent steps together.

I perform the procedure according to the clinical and anesthesia plan I have set for you.

I monitor your general condition afterwards and give you personal care and follow-up instructions.
Preparing for an abortion
The aim of preparation is to determine gestational age accurately, assess personal risks and create a safe clinical plan.

- Do not stop any regular medication on your own.

- Arrange a companion and transport according to the anesthesia plan.
- Bring any requested test results and documents.

Recovery and aftercare
Mild pelvic cramps and bleeding that varies from person to person may occur after the procedure. How recovery progresses depends on gestational age, the method used, your personal health and following the advice I give you.
Home care
- Rest on the first day and avoid strenuous activity.
- Use only the medicines I recommend, exactly as instructed.
- Keep an eye on the amount of bleeding and how you feel.
- Follow your personal instructions on hygiene, intercourse, tampons, swimming pools and the sea.
- Do not skip your planned follow-up examination.
- Discuss contraception and future pregnancy plans with me.
Seek care without delay if you have
- Bleeding that is heavier than I described, or increasing
- Severe abdominal or pelvic pain, or pain that does not ease with painkillers
- Fever, chills or marked weakness
- Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
- Fainting, shortness of breath or severe dizziness
- Suspicion that pregnancy symptoms are continuing
In an emergency: If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fainting or a rapid worsening of your general condition, do not wait for an online answer; go to the nearest emergency department.
Possible risks and side effects
When performed at a suitable gestational age and under the necessary clinical conditions, vacuum aspiration has a low complication rate. However, no surgical procedure is completely risk-free. I assess your personal risks carefully before the procedure.
Bleeding and cramps
Bleeding and period-like cramps may occur for a while after the procedure. The expected level varies with personal circumstances.
Infection
Rare. Fever, foul-smelling discharge or increasing pain needs assessment.
Retained tissue
If the uterus is not completely emptied, further follow-up, treatment or a repeat procedure may be needed.
Injury to the cervix or uterus
These are rare complications. Depending on the findings, observation or further intervention may be planned.
Anesthesia-related effects
Undesired effects such as nausea, dizziness, allergic reaction or effects on breathing and circulation may occur.
Incomplete procedure
Rarely, the pregnancy may continue or further clinical assessment may be needed.
Confidentiality of your consultation and records
Privacy is fundamental throughout the examination, information and procedure. Personal health data is processed and protected in accordance with Turkish data protection law No. 6698 (KVKK), patient rights regulations, professional confidentiality obligations and other relevant legislation.

Myths and facts about abortion
Below are the misconceptions I hear most often in my consultations, and what the medical evidence actually says.
“Pregnancy is not possible after an abortion.”
A suitable procedure completed without complications does not in itself mean that pregnancy cannot happen in the future. You can discuss fertility and contraception with me.
“Gestational age can be calculated exactly from the last period alone.”
The date of the last period is an important starting point, but ultrasound is needed to confirm the gestational age and the location of the pregnancy.
“An abortion can be performed on request at any stage of pregnancy.”
In Türkiye, elective termination has legal time limits and consent requirements. Situations beyond ten weeks are only considered under the conditions defined in the legislation.

Frequently asked questions about abortion in Antalya
These are the questions my patients ask me most often. We clarify the answer for your own situation together after an examination and ultrasound.
Is abortion legal in Antalya?
In Türkiye, termination of pregnancy is governed by Law No. 2827 and related legislation. Elective termination can be considered until the end of the tenth week of pregnancy, provided the legal conditions are met. We determine your personal legal and medical suitability together at the consultation.
How is gestational age determined?
The date of the last menstrual period is taken into account, but gestational age and the location of the pregnancy inside the uterus are assessed with ultrasound. In situations such as irregular periods, calculating from dates alone can be misleading.
Is vacuum aspiration painful?
Pain perception varies from person to person. A suitable anesthesia or sedation plan is chosen according to your health and the clinical assessment. Cramps similar to period pain may occur after the procedure.
How long does the procedure take?
The duration of the procedure itself is not the same as the total time spent at the clinic. Because of the examination, ultrasound, preparation, anesthesia and observation afterwards, the total time varies according to the person and the plan.
When can I return to daily life after the procedure?
This depends on the procedure, the anesthesia method, your job and your general health. Resting on the first day may be recommended. Please follow the personal instructions I give you for driving, intense exercise and returning to work.
Is bleeding normal after an abortion?
Spotting or bleeding may occur for a while. The expected amount and duration of bleeding vary from person to person. If bleeding becomes heavier, or you have severe pain, fever or foul-smelling discharge, seek care at a healthcare facility without delay.
Does an abortion prevent future pregnancy?
A suitable procedure completed without complications does not in itself mean that future pregnancy will be prevented. However, everyone’s gynecological history is different, and you can discuss any concerns about fertility with me.
Will my consultation and health information be kept confidential?
Personal health data is protected in accordance with Turkish data protection law (KVKK), patient rights regulations and professional confidentiality obligations. Data is only processed or shared on a legal basis such as explicit consent, the provision of healthcare or a legal obligation.
